Peep the Kids for Kerry pins!<h3>Allow me to introduce myself...</h3>My name is Thomas Boomhower. I'm a lifelong Democrat, an economic developer, a historian, and a committed public servant. I'm running for Assembly in large part because of the dedication to public service I've seen modeled by my Mom for as long as I can remember. She's built a career on working tirelessly to better the lives of those in her community, and I've seen that impact first hand countless times. We need people dedicated to true public service in elected office.I've spent my life trying to replicate the impact she's had. As a kid that meant canvassing and phone banking for local elections, volunteering at voter registration drives, and serving as Student Council President. And like her, I've spent my career working to improve the lives of New Yorkers.That's included working for both houses of the New York State Legislature, as a Legislative Assistant in the NYS Senate, and a Researcher for the NYS Assembly Majority, where on a given day I could tackle anything from preparing policy memos, to constituent services, to drafting legislation supporting local libraries. For the last four years my career has been centered on supporting our rural economies. First, at a statewide association that curated best practices, and success stories, particularly for rural economic development, and then as a practitioner in the community I grew up in as the Economic Development Specialist for Greene County.Having the opportunity to help lead small business support programs, workforce development initiatives, and strategic industry attraction efforts in the place I grew up, was truly incredible, and it showed me just how hard things are for our rural communities in Upstate New York. That's why my work now is focused on supporting the next wave of entrepreneurs and the innovation economy in Upstate. I believe that smart economic development is critical for ensuring our communities and small businesses remain viable and competitive.My commitment to public service has extended beyond my career. I'm also privileged to serve as a Village Trustee in Catskill. During my time in office I've had the opportunity to work on our Local Waterfront Revitalization Program, serve on our Downtown Revitalization Initiative Committee, and serve as the Village's liaison to historical and environmental groups like Climate Smart Catskill. I've also consistently championed housing in our community, with a focus on delivering housing affordable for our residents.<h4>I'm running for NYS Assembly because I believe that my combination of experience in economic development, public service and governance, have given me the skillset we need to tackle the challenges facing our region. We need a comprehensive approach that centers our communities and is rooted in public service.</h4><h3>Now the Personal Part</h3>I live in the Village of Catskill with my wife Maddy, and our wonderful pets.I graduated from Coxsackie-Athens High School.I have a Bachelor's of Science in Law &amp; Society from Sage College of Albany. My studies focused on a mix of pre-law, criminal justice, sociology, and psychology courses.I have a Master's of Arts in United States History from SUNY Albany. My studies centered on race and gender in American history, as well as settler colonialism, and Indigenous American history.I'm an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction, some of my favorite works include Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown, A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin, the Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee, and American Wolf by Nate Blakeslee.I love hiking, fishing (especially ice fishing), and just generally being in the woods, but I don't do any of it nearly enough.

Upstate New York is a special place. We're blessed to live in a naturally beautiful region in a way that few people are. My promise to you is to fight for our home as your representative in the Assembly.Our district has never had a representative in the Assembly Majority. Which functionally means, we've never had a real voice in that chamber. Someone to advocate for common sense solutions for Upstate New Yorkers. Someone to push back against the policies that harm our rural communities.We need an advocate that understands how to make life more affordable, support our small businesses and family owned farms, and improve our infrastructure without compromising on our values. I'm running to represent our values in the Assembly.

For too long rural Upstaters have gone without a voice in the NYS Assembly. Together we can change that.

Fighting for Upstate

We're in the midst of a housing crisis, with no end in sight. Rents have skyrocketed, homeownership seems out of reach for too many, people are being priced out of their own communities, and utility costs are astronomical.I believe we need an all of the above approach.As your representative in the Assembly I will:<ul><li>Champion rural and Upstate housing issues. Our communities have been neglected by Albany for too long. Many of our housing programs support urban areas, or are built without our rural towns and villages in mind. We need to make it easier for smaller municipalities to take advantage of existing housing programs, and design new ones that reflect our rural communities.</li><li>Support locally led housing initiatives. Each of our communities are unique, with their own sets of histories, challenges, and opportunities. These cookie cutter solutions offered by Albany do nothing to help our rural communities. We need policies that put the power back in the hands of our local housing champions.</li><li>Work to streamline New York's housing incentive programs. We need more housing in New York. It's really that simple. And the State has dozens of programs designed to incentivize that! But, as is often the case, the best intentions are befouled by an incoherent, bloated tangle of red tape. We can cut through that to deliver desperately needed solutions.</li><li>Reform New York's zoning. New York's zoning is outdated and makes it hard for our towns and villages to find creative solutions to the housing crisis.</li></ul>

I believe that what makes our communities special are the people that make them up. Too many of us are being driven out of the communities we grew up in because we simply can't afford to rent, let alone buy, housing that meets our needs.

Housing

I want to be abundantly clear. I am firmly committed to ensuring that we preserve the natural beauty of our region, to fighting to protect our environment, and to championing the State's environmental goals. Protecting Our Environment

I've spent the last four years working to support small businesses, rural economic development, farmers, and entrepreneurs.Being an entrepreneur, running and operating a farm or small business... it's hard! There's no other way to say it. I truly believe that owning a small business is one of the bravest things someone can do. It takes everything you have. Passion, belief, time, energy, money. Everything.Now, that's not exactly breaking news. The State has a lot of programs designed to support small businesses because they are the life blood of our communities. The problem is it takes cutting through a jungle of red tape to access any of them. And even if you do, chances are it'll take too long for that money to get to you to even make a difference.I'll support our farmers and small businesses by:<ul><li>Cutting through the bureaucracy. Small business owners and farmers don't have the time to deal with mountain of paperwork to start a business, or access funding. We need to streamline our system and make it faster and easier for business owners to access state funding and programs.</li><li>Championing workforce development. We need to invest in our workforce. Providing job and skills training programs helps our workers earn higher wages and creates a pipeline of skilled employees for our businesses.</li><li>Centering Local. We see time and again these huge announcements of millions of dollars in economic development projects for our communities, but how often do we actually feel that impact? Our state programs should be focused on driving real results to our communities, not press releases and ribbon cuttings.</li></ul>

New York has become one of the least friendly states for businesses in the country. Nobody has felt the impact of that more than our family owned farms and small businesses. As your representative in the Assembly, I will fight to make life easier on our small businesses, cutting through red tape and leveling the playing field.

Supporting Farmers & Small Business Owners

One of the central ideas of this campaign is that we the people have been abandoned by a broken system that has above all, put profits over people. What better demonstration of that do we have than the current push for AI adoption and data centers?Sure, AI has its place as a tool, but we need to ensure that we are using common sense so that we don't allow the negative features to overcome its utility.We can ensure that New York is at the forefront of innovation, without harming our communities. To do so we need to ensure that the costs of data centers aren't passed onto the communities through our utility bills, and that we're not draining our fresh water supplies.

We need common sense policies that support innovation and job creation, but don't leave our communities out to dry (literally), or drive up our utility costs.

Data Centers & AI

I am dedicated to the values of True Public Service. To me that means showing up, talking, sharing ideas, and above all listening. My job as your Assemblymember will be to champion our communities, and the people that make them so great. My commitment is to you, not to the office, accruing more power or prestige, or moving up in Albany. Constituent Services will be my central focus, followed by pursuing and supporting a legislative agenda that puts our communities first.

I'm committed to serving you in the Assembly. Not corporations, not mega donors, but the people.

CATSKILL, NY - Thomas Boomhower announced today that his campaign has generated over $65,000 in total contributions less than two weeks after announcing his candidacy for New York’s 102nd Assembly District. This figure includes funds received through January 11th, the cut off date for included financial disclosure data for the January Periodic Report for campaigns, and incorporates internal projections for anticipated public matching funds.&nbsp; This early fundraising surge reflects strong grassroots enthusiasm, and positions the campaign as a serious and competitive force in the race for the 102nd Assembly District.&nbsp; “Reaching this milestone so quickly sends a clear message,” said Boomhower. “People are eager to have leadership that puts our local communities first, and they’re ready to send someone to Albany to champion their values and truly address their concerns.”&nbsp; The $65,000 figure includes direct contributions received from supporters, as well as estimated matching funds that the campaign anticipates to qualify for under the applicable State public financing program. Standing With Working People &amp; Strong Labor RightsI believe that working people are the backbone of our communities, and strong labor protections are essential to a fair economy. Too often, big corporations and political insiders call the shots while workers struggle for living wages, safe workplaces, and basic benefits.I’ll fight to protect the right to organize and bargain collectively, support job quality and workplace safety, and ensure that our public investments create good-paying jobs, and especially union jobs, right here in Upstate New York.I’ll stand with unions and workers against policies that undercut wages or weaken worker protections, and work to expand opportunities for apprenticeships and career-track employment that build the middle class, not just corporate profits.

Supporting Workers

As a Village Trustee, I know all too well the monumental costs facing our municipalities when it comes to addressing aging infrastructure. From water &amp; sewer, to road or broadband, we need a radical reinvestment into our infrastructure here in New York. I will champion a dedicated fund to support infrastructure upgrades and modernize outdated systems to keep our communities safer and support our business community. <ul><li>Broadband &amp; Internet Access: How are we still having this conversation? Internet access has become an essential part of life. We should be talking about providing high-speed fiber to every address in New York, not just the bare minimum in coverage. As your Assemblymember, I will not just fight to expand broadband access to every address in AD 102, but to high speed internet as well.</li><li>Municipal Water &amp; Sewer: Water and sewer improvements are needed in nearly every municipality in the state. We have aging infrastructure unsuited to our current needs, environment or business climate. The costs to address these challenges are astronomical, and the programs designed to offer support are an avalanche of paperwork and red tape. </li><li>Roads &amp; Bridges: We need to continue reinvesting in our roads and bridges to keep people safe.</li><li>Business Needs: Our aging infrastructure is making it hard to meet the needs of our business community. Many of our communities are facing water and sewer systems with limited capacity that throttle business attraction efforts, not to mention our outdated electrical grid.</li></ul>

Why are so many people in AD 102 left without basics like broadband or cell service? It's dangerous, it's dumb, and it's time we change that.

Franklin Candidate Forum

I will be participating in a candidate forum hosted by the Franklin Democratic Committee on February 14th.

There are a lot of buzzwords being thrown around these days, and affordability might just be the buzziest of all. And for good reason!For far too many of us, life has become unaffordable. It costs more than it should to provide for our families, heat our homes, and put a roof over our heads. It doesn't need to be this way.But what does "affordability" actually mean? I think it's vague by design, so that the powers that be can move the goal posts, make lives easier for their mega donors and tell us that we'll feel that impact someday soon.I think what we should be striving for is Economic Security.Economic Security for All Means:<ul><li>Putting People over Profits because our communities and the people living in them are what make New York so great.</li><li>Driving Down Housing Costs and working to make home ownership more attainable. </li><li>Supporting our Entrepreneurs by cutting needless redtape and making it easier to open and run a small business. </li><li>Supporting our Farmers by reinvesting in family owned farms that produce the healthiest food for our families. </li><li>Driving Down Costs by supporting legislation like the New York Health Act and the Hudson Valley Power Authority. </li></ul>

Basic, everyday essentials have become unaffordable for too many of us. We can change that, but it takes leaders willing to fight for common sense solutions.

Economic Security for All

Many of our rural communities are child care deserts. Too many of our working families simply cannot find child care they need, forcing them to leave jobs they love. And it doesn't get any easier for those with school aged kids, finding care from the time school lets out until the work day ends can be nearly impossible.We can address this by:<ul><li>Investing in our child care workforce by offering tuition reimbursement for rural child care providers and workers.</li><li>Supporting our children by extending child care tax credit programs to recreational facilities like gymnastics studios, dance studios, martial arts academies, and other places that provide after school care and enrichment.</li><li>Delivering true Universal Pre-K by funding rural programs ensuring all 3 and 4 year olds have access to full day programs.</li><li>Funding Rural Libraries because our libraries are one of the last truly free third spaces left.</li></ul>

We need to do more to ensure the safety and education of our children. Programs like Universal Pre-K and creative solutions to fund recreational providers for children are essential.

Child Care

Getting the medical care we need, when we need it, should be something we can take for granted. But too many of our rural communities are lacking essential healthcare providers, forcing people to drive too far, or wait too long, for the care they need. And the costs, from insurance coverage to actual care, can be so high that many people are dissuaded from even seeking treatment.Access to healthcare should not depend on income, employment status or zip code. We need solutions that support our rural healthcare providers, EMS &amp; first responders, and drive down costs.Here's How:<ul><li>Passing the New York Health Act because it helps ensures our rural communities get access to the care they need, and drives down healthcare costs.</li><li>Championing EMS &amp; First Responders by supporting programs to provide them with paid training.</li><li>Supporting rural healthcare with tuition forgiveness for healthcare workers in rural areas.</li></ul>

Insurance costs have skyrocketed, health care costs have skyrocketed... and far too many of our rural communities have been abandoned by the for profit health care system.
